Successful Project Management for "Advantage India" - Role of PM Education & ResearchChennai, India
31 Jan - 02 Feb 2013
Research & Academic Conference on Project Management, 2013, was a three-day professional development event, conducted by Project Management Institute (PMI) India and hosted by the prestigious IIT Madras, Chennai. The first such conference was held at NICMAR, Pune in 2011 and received an overwhelming response from scholars, senior practitioners and students. The second conference drew an equally enthusiastic response from the education fraternity. The theme of this conference was Successful Project Management for Advantage India to address the role of Project management Education & Research. The theme was inspired by the current mercurial economic climate. The question that is on everyone's mind is - in an increasingly projectized work culture, how does India gain an advantage and get noticed by the world? The answer is simply that India as a nation must nurture more qualified project managers. It has been proved time and again that projects executed on time and within budget can help the individuals involved, the organization and the nation grow. It is therefore of paramount importance that educational institutions begin taking the long overdue onus of systematically bridging the gaps in capabilities, competencies, knowledge base and expert talent in the field of Project Management.
The conference offered an opportunity for all project management academicians and students across India to come together, gain knowledge and share experiences.
The inaugural address was made by Chief Guest Dr. Srinivasan Sundarrajan, Director, National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli. The conference also saw presentations by several eminent academicians and senior project practitioners from across the country, like Dr. Karuna Jain- IIT Bombay (SJMSOM), Prof Gopalaswamy Ramesh - IIIT Bangalore, Dr. L.S Ganesh - IIT Madras (DOMS), Dr. K. N. Satyanarayana - IIT Madras, Dr. Kaye Remington, Author of 'Leading Complex Projects' and Vikas Grover, Senior Vice President, Technology Planning, Vodafone.
Speaking at the conference, Mr. Raj Kalady, MD PMI (India) said, "Managing projects requires specific knowledge and skills which are uniform across the world. Companies need to recruit pre-trained managers. Therefore it is imperative that MBA and Engineering curricula include courses on project management. Unlike more narrowly focused fields of study, project management encompasses an array of skill sets spanning risk management, time management, communication, people management, scope management and other areas. That very diversity is what today's knowledge-based economy demands. Thus, introducing project management in schools will help in grooming the next generation of business leaders."
PMI India has also instituted awards to honor distinguished academicians & scholars for their contribution to the field of project management. These awards were given away at the conference in a glittering ceremony by the Chief Guest - Dr. R Mahadevan, Whole Time Director, India Pistons. The award winners were Dr. Koshy Varghese who received the PMI India Distinguished Scholar Award and Dr. L. Boeing Singh who received the PMI India Young Research Scholar Award.
Leading Complex Projects |
Leading Complex Projects by Kaye Remington is very useful book for both scholars and PM practitioners. It follows naturally from Kaye's earlier book (Tools for Complex Projects, Remington and Pollack, 2007). Leading Complex Projects is based on extensive research, including over 70 in-depth interviews with senior project leaders who have successfully delivered complex, high risk projects, but it is written in practical language designed for practitioners as well as post-graduate students.
