CORPORATES on the first day of the Gujarat govern­ment-sponsored global in vestors' summit pledged Rs8 lakh crore investments in infrastruc­ture or 20% of the amount that Prime Minister had targetted to spend during the 12th five year plan (2012-17). Manmohan Singh intends to double India's infrastructure spending to $ 1 tril­lion (Rs45 lakh crore).

The opening day of the summit saw the state government mop up close to Rs 7 lakh crore through 348 agreements signed with compa­nies operating in the energy sec­tor. An additional X1.5 lakh crore investments were signed with in­frastructure companies mostly for projects in Dholera SIR (Special Investment Region) that will en­compass a Japanese city and a sky bus project in Ahmedabad.
