Best Project of the Year - Large (Budgeted Project Cost of more than INR 1000 crores)

PMI India has established a number of awards to recognize and honor contributions and achievements in the project management profession. The PMI India Awards program has been administered since 2009 on an annual basis. This document contains the information and process to be used to submit nominations for PMI India "Project of the Year" Award.


This award recognizes and honors a project team that has delivered superior results through exemplary application of project management principles.


Any large project, with a budgeted cost of INR 1000 crores or more, implemented anywhere in India, and perceived as having effectively applied project management principles and techniques, is eligible to submit for judgment provided that:

Note: The primary criteria for classification as Large, Medium or Small will be the cost of Project. However, if need be the applicant's project may be re-classified by PMI in concurrence with the applicant keeping in mind data furnished on project time line and effort.

  • The project has been essentially completed in the calendar year 2012 and has been accepted as complete by the Client/Owner prior to nomination.
  • Permission is obtained for the use of copyrighted materials included in the submission.
  • Research or development projects, which may contain proprietary or confidential, technical, or commercial information, must be publicly disclosed by owner.
  • Project should have been managed in India with at least 75% of the project execution done in India.
  • The nominated project must have been successfully completed using processes and approaches consistent with Global Standards in Project Management, an example being A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)- Third edition (or later)
  • The project could be located anywhere in India and could be from the private or public sector. The project manager and/or team directly responsible for the project must also be located in India.
  • The project may or may not have won awards or other recognition from other professional associations.

Number of Awards

One Winner and Runner up will be identified out of the nominations received.

Evaluation Criteria

  • Met or exceeded Owner/Client's needs as evidenced by a letter from the Owner Client.
  • Met or improved on budget and schedule performance when compared to original goals.
  • Demonstrated originality and uniqueness of applied project management techniques, including innovative application of practices/methods.
  • Exhibited technical aspects and advancement of the project management profession consistent with Global Standards in Project Management, an example being A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)- Third edition (or later)
  • Demonstrated complexity of the project and unusual conditions, issues, and barriers requiring special management team action and performance.

Presentation of the Award and Recognition

Recipients of the Project of the Year Award and the Runner up will be presented the award at the Project Management National Conference, India 2013, being held in September this year. PMI India will acknowledge the Winner and Runner Up of the "Project of the Year" award at specified PMI events and also through their e-magazine - Manage India and any other PMI or non PMI Publications. The Project Manager or a person designated by the project team should be available to receive the award.

Nomination Package Outline

Submission Requirements
All submissions will have to be made through an online portal which can be accessed at the link given below

Submissions have to be in English and in electronic form only. Contacts for securing peripheral project information by the judging committee should be included in the project application. The release or clearance of such peripheral materials should be provided by and will remain the responsibility of the nominating group.

The application process is in two stages. At the preliminary stage, data is to be furnished only online and no documents have to be submitted. At the second stage, documents may be uploaded on the online portal up to a max size of 10 MB. Among other details, this may include details of project management processes used by project team during project implementation. For example, this may include processes related to Scope, Time, Cost, Quality, Risk and Procurement management/Human Resources, Communication and Stakeholder management/Integration management or similar or equivalent processes. It may also include sample documents and artifacts of the processes - for example work breakdown structure, schedules, cost estimates, quality and risk plans, progress reports, change management plans, procurement documents, staffing and communication plans etc.

The submittal must also contain:
  • Written consent/support by owner and/or client recognizing the submittal of the project and stating that the project has been accepted as complete.
  • A written agreement of relevant stakeholders to assist in preparing a Showcase Project article to be published in PMI Publications and marketing articles.

Nomination Procedure

The nomination process will consist of the following 2 stages

Stage - Preliminary

Step 1: The nominee will submit 'Preliminary information' about the nomination before April 28th, 2013 online on the PMI Conference 2013 website using the link:

The nominee will provide the Preliminary Information by answering a set of questions on the online portal. At this stage nominee does not have to send any documents as attachments.

Step 2: The nominee's application at this stage will be evaluated by a panel of judges and the successful or unsuccessful nominee at the preliminary round will be intimated by email by PMI by May 22nd 2013.

Stage - Final

Step 1: The nominee will have to submit 'Final information' about the nomination before June 23rd, 2013 online on the PMI Conference 2013 website. The link will be shared with lead award applicants/nominators whose nomination has been shortlisted for the final stage.

The nominee will provide the Final Information by answering a set of questions on the online portal. At this stage nominee may upload documents as attachments. (upto a max of 10 MB)

AAll the documents submitted should be converted to a PDF non-editable format. The documents should be compressed into a single folder using WinZip etc. so that only a single compressed entity gets uploaded.

Step 2: The nominee's application at this stage will be evaluated by a panel of jury and PMI will intimate successful or unsuccessful nominee by e mail by July 24th 2013. Those successful at this stage will become the shortlisted nominees for the award. A maximum of 6 nominees will be considered for each category of award. The final winner and runner up will be chosen in the next step.

Step 3: The nominee's application at this stage will be finally evaluated / validated by a panel of jury and PMI will intimate the successful winner and runner up will be intimated by e mail / phone before August 24th 2013.

Award Applicant/ Nominator Eligibility

The award applicant could be a sponsor, a senior member of the Project team or a senior representative of the organization.

Verification Process and Selection

The 'Project of the Year' award evaluation will be done by an "at-large" panel of jury, established by PMI India / Organizing committee.

Two nominations will be selected as the winner and Runner-up of the "Project of the Year" Award. Selection will be made by August 24th, 2013. The results of the PMI India Awards Program will be communicated to the awardees by the organizing committee. Formal announcement of the winner shall be made at the PMI India National Conference to be held in Gurgaon in September 2013.

General Terms and Conditions

Applicant must agree that:
  • The nomination package will be completed in close conformance with the established format.
  • All necessary clearances, releases, and permissions needed for public release of all submitted materials will be obtained in writing.
  • Expenses will not be reimbursed for assembling the nomination package or for any presentation materials that may need to be created should the project be selected as the winner.

The decision of the designated panel of reviewers will be final.

In case the panel of reviewers feels that none of the individual submissions meet the minimum standards as stipulated in this web page, the award will stand cancelled and no Winner and / or Runner up will be announced.
