Brief Information:
The challenges faced by a project manager, particularly those related to planning and controlling are of high concern. The Project Manager should display the capability to handle the end-to-end project life cycle. Creation of a tangible plan followed by the subsequent monitoring and progress review is the core responsibility of the project manager. The use of latest tools for project tracking during the execution phase is key to become an effective and efficient project manager.

This case is based on a real project of a Mumbai based company in the services sector. It highlights the process of improving the effectiveness of planning by understanding the integrative nature of projects. It also helps to learn project monitoring and controlling processes, including fast tracking and crashing of project schedule in real life project environment. This case will help individuals working on projects to assimilate the theory of project management into practice.

The case is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on planning of activities, resources and cost by identifying the complete scope of work using work breakdown structure and its interdependencies. The second part emphasizes on resource planning with focus on effective estimation and budgeting process, thereby achieving improved monitoring and controlling of projects. This case adapts the project management approach as discussed in Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Guide, and can be used by various audiences keen to learn use of project management tools. This case demonstrates the use of MS Project® as an example tool, though not restricting the use to other tools of project management. The efforts are directed towards a complete hands-on approach to the concepts of project management from the inception to close of a project.

Learning Objectives:
The student will learn:

a) To be able to acquire knowledge and skills in project planning and monitoring of projects
b) To identify project life cycle and defining all necessary work to be done during the project
c) Learn to create Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
d) To develop a project plan within project constraints i.e. resource allocation, scheduling and estimation of budget using tools and technique such as
I. Microsoft Excel Sheet
II. Microsoft Project with Precedence Diagram Method (PDM) and Critical Path Method(CPM)
e) To monitor and control the progress of work and carry out variance analysis using Earned Value techniques
. f) The students will learn time management by using various techniques of fast tracking and crashing.
